Job Description

LMAX Group is a FinTech company that designs, develops, builds and runs leading edge financial exchanges in major financial centres around the world, specialising in both fiat and crypto-currencies. We’re growing and expanding into new areas and need you to help us.

Our core product is ultra-low latency, high frequency trading platforms. We also handle a lot of market data, and so we run a lot of bare-metal servers.  We apply modern DevOps principles and automation techniques to both our Cloud and on-prem infrastructure.

We want an energetic and passionate engineer to bring new skills and perspectives to complement our Information Systems team.  We are made up of Systems, Networks and Security Specialists whose job is to build and maintain LMAX’s infrastructure, enforce regulatory compliance, and provide a stable platform for our state-of-the-art trading engine.

At LMAX you’ll start by being told what to do, but after a while you will be telling your boss what you’re going to do, how, and why.

This should describe you:

  • You’ve managed large Linux estates.
  • You’ll be comfortable with – or eager to learn about – all levels of infrastructure; from the AWS CLI to the lower levels of Linux and hardware.
  • We love Open Source, we support and contribute to it. We would expect you should too. It’s 2022 so it’s OK to like Systemd now.
  • You love automating and optimising. It could be automation of deployments, or little scripts that make your colleague’s jobs just that little bit easier.
  • You have an SRE / analytical mindset, always asking “How do I measure this? How do I test this?”.
  • You love to learn, and you don’t shy away from responsibility. If the task requires rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty, you’re in.

You will have these key skills

  • Strong Linux skills – building, configuring, monitoring, automating (CentOS, Fedora)
  • A developer approach to Systems Engineering: test, code, automate
  • Worked with Infrastructure-as-Code practices and tooling, and in a DevOps culture (Puppet, Ansible, Terraform)

You will bring some of these skills, but more importantly you’re interested in some of the others

  • Data-driven monitoring and observability (Grafana, InfluxDB, Splunk, Prometheus, etc)
  • Configuration management (we use a lot of Puppet)
  • Decent scripting, and some exposure to testing frameworks (molecule, pytest, rspec, etc)
  • Supporting CI/CD delivery pipelines (Git Lab, Jenkins, etc)
  • Stronger than usual networking & TCP/IP
  • Hardware, data centres, & physical infrastructure design
  • Familiar with all things Cloud; automation, services & providers
  • Big data processing and storage (SQL, ETL tools, Ceph, etc)
  • Performance engineering, kernel and OS tuning
  • Crypto-currency and blockchain technology

What you and the team will be doing

  • Support, monitoring and reliability of our ultra low latency trading platform
  • Automation that increases the velocity of the team
  • Design well documented, simple and elegant systems which are easily supportable
  • Provisioning physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure for a wide variety of business requirements
  • Pair working with Systems, Networks, and Security Specialists
  • Puppet development and testing in a continuous deployment process
  • Low level TCP debugging for diagnosing errors and latency issues
  • Scripting and automating processes to ensure consistency and repeatability
  • Supporting client facing and internal infrastructure with a variety of OSs and software
  • Monitoring systems to proactively prevent issues arising
  • Hardware upgrades and data centre installations
  • Business As Usual support and resolution of incidents
